The negotiations of the long-term EU budget for 2028-2034 will begin under the Danish Presidency of the Council.
The Commission has presented its proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the EU which is to apply from 2028 to 2034. As Presidency for the Council of the EU, Denmark will lead the initial negotiations. Minister for Finance Nicolai Wammen says:
We are happy that the proposal is now on the table. As Presidency, we are eager to get the work started. We will do our utmost to take the work forward and set an ambitious and responsible course for Europe.
The proposal from the Commission has high ambitions on reforms that we need to take seriously. We need an EU budget designed to answer the challenges of the future, not of the past. Status quo is not an option. The EU budget should be modernised. It must be simpler, more impactful and focused on our common, strategic priorities. It must also be responsible, allowing Member States to finance contributions within national budgets. And it must maintain fair burden sharing. The Danish position on rebates is well known and unchanged.
In the coming six months, the Danish Presidency will be leading the discussions among Member States. It is important that we make as much progress as possible if we are to avoid delays and be ready to put a new and modern EU budget to work from day one.
